5 Tips to Organize Your Garage

Before organizing your garage, it is important that you properly clean the garage floors. Garage floor are usually messy, exposed to gas leaks, pesticides, cleaning agents and solvents. By cleaning the floor from potentially hazardous substances, you will then be able to organize your garage safely, without debris getting in the way.

Purchase reinforced garbage bags that won’t break. Your garage will be full of items that you have accumulated throughout the years. If you have a hobby like carpentry or welding, then you have dust and extra pieces of timber lying around. Bring out the broom to remove larger pieces of garbage, then use a vacuum cleaner to remove any smaller pieces of dust that you might have missed.

After you have cleaned the floor, use soapy water to remove any grease stains. A concentrated detergent made with sulfates will usually be enough to cut through any grease spots. However, if you are experiencing difficulty removing some of the blemishes on the floor, then invest in a grease cleaner that specializes in the breakdown of synthetic oil. Coupled with a wire brush, the grease remover will lighten up any discoloration on the garage floor. Once the floor is clear, you will be able to process items in your garage.

Organizing Your Garage: 5 Tips

Invest in Garage Containers

Organize your garage by using containers with reinforced plastic lids. One of the benefits of the garage is that it is not a room that is typically visited by family and friends. This gives you the opportunity to focus more on the functionality of your organization solution rather than aesthetic concerns. Large plastic jugs with reinforced lids are ideal for securing nails, steel tools, and smaller equipment. Purchase several plastic containers that fit over each other for a makeshift shelving unit. These type of containers are available at any store than sells home or office storage supplies

You can also color coded plastic bins. For example, clear bins can be used to store seasonal clothing, with the clear plastic allowing you to identify outerwear quickly. Put seldom used equipment out of the way and out of sight with opaque containers. When stacking these containers, make sure that the heaviest container is at the bottom, and the lighter containers are on top. For items that you need frequent access to, consider purchasing plastic containers with a front door compartment.

Take advantage of exposed ceiling space. As mentioned, the garage is not somewhere that many people tend to gather and socialize. Take advantage of open ceiling spaces with overhead compartments.

Build a Miniature Storage Shed

By getting as many items off the floor and delegating them to the shed, you will open up the floor space. That in itself will give the illusion of an open, cleaner, accessible garage.  You can install a bicycle mount on the wall of the garage. Specialized hooks allow you to secure your unused bike by its wheel, instead of taking precious space across the garage floor.

Color Code Your Circuit Breaker

Circuit breakers can be very daunting, especially for first-time homeowners. If an electrical equipment is not functioning, then you will be required to deal with the circuit breaker.

Pick up a couple of color swatches from your local home improvement store. Use a puncture to remove a couple of circles from color swatches and secure them on the buttons of the circuit breaker with glue. Test out each breaker and find out what it powers. If you are unsure, you can employ the help of an electrician. They will be able to align a certain colored button to a certain device or area of the home. You will then be able to write down the location, letting you know what button corresponds to what electrical item in the house for future reference.

Create a Magnetic Strip for Tools

Using your tools and losing them in your garage is a headache. You garage is spacious, and that lost wrench could be anywhere in the house. Installing a magnetic strip over your workstation will ensure that you will have easy access to your regularly used tools. These magnetic strips could be adhered to your desk, over your table, and along the sides of a cabinet.

Repurpose Drawers and Shelves

Unsightly drawers could be used to help with your organizational efforts. Your shelves can also be part of a larger wall panel storage system that will enable you to hang your brooms, shovels, rakes, and shelves.
