Closet Organizing Tips

If your typical morning consists of hitting the snooze a few times, jumping out of bed in a panic when you realize what time it is, and racing to get ready for the day, the last thing you need is a messy closet. An organized closet not only makes you feel calmer but it helps you get dressed and choose an outfit faster in the morning. Use these tips for designing a closet that works for you and choosing the best closet organizers for your bedroom.

1. Double up.
If you’re only using a single rod for hanging clothes and you need more space, consider using a single rod for half the closet width and a double rod for the other half. Hang short clothes on the top rod and install the bottom rod underneath the clothes hanging above, leaving at least 6 inches of space between the two. If there’s extra space below the bottom rod, you can add storage bins or a shoe rack on the closet floor. As an alternative, you can leave more space between the rods and add a shelf with small baskets for extra storage.

2. Organize shoes.
Whether you have two pairs of shoes or two hundred, there’s a shoe organizer for you. Closet organizers for shoes can be anything from a hanging organizer with pockets to a shoe rack on the closet floor to cubby holes or a door rack. For small pairs, such as flip flops and flat sandals, you can double up shoes two to a cubby or pocket. For shoes that you only wear occasionally, keep the original shoebox and stack the boxes on a top shelf.

3. Know what you need.
Do you mostly prefer to hang clothes or fold them? Do you like things put away neatly in drawers and baskets, or do you like to keep things out in the open so you can see immediately what you have? Before you choose a closet design and buy closet organizers, you’ll need to know what fits your style and preferences. Choose drawers and cabinets if you like things out of sight. Clear drawers and shelves are best if you like items out in the open.

4. Make sharing easier.
If you share your closet with a partner or your kids share a closet, define whose stuff belongs where. If possible, split the closet in two by installing a tower of cabinets in the middle and a hanging rod on either side. Then divvy up the drawer space and assign one side of the closet to each roommate.

5. Set up zones.
Organizing your clothes by seasons, occasions, or color makes it easier to find what you need and coordinate outfits. Stack jeans together on one shelf, sweaters on another shelf, and dresses together on a hanging rod. Arrange your clothes by style or color to make it easier to see what you have to wear and find new outfits. Place items that you wear the most at eye level and items that you wear only occasionally or seasonally up high or down low.
