Creative Ways to Maximize Space with Wire Shelving

If you’ve grown frustrated with the limitations of your current storage system, or if you don’t have a storage system and are going crazy with all the clutter, consider installing some wire shelving. Deploying wire shelving for your home storage project is a cost-effective and versatile way to maximize the space you’re working with.

At Harkraft, we love taking on a project, and we especially love sizing up a new storage project. Having done a ton of storage projects with wire shelving, we wanted to put together this guide to give you some tips on how to create maximum space with wire shelving.

Labeled Bins

While wire shelving provide a sturdy, low cost option for shelving, there are not exactly the most aesthetically-pleasing option. Getting some bins for your wire shelves will not only improve the way your storage system looks, it will improve your ability to organize the area. Bins allow you to stow away items that would otherwise be in open sight. Items that would normally be cluttering the shelves are hidden away, but easy to find because of clear labeling. Labeling is always something that pays dividends when it comes to storage. The easier it is to find what you’re looking for the better.

There’s an endless variety of flat-sided bins available that differ in material, color, and design. If you’re looking for cohesion, get matching bins. Want to color-code the bins to further organize the contents kept inside them? Have at it.

Another quick tip for improving the way your wire shelves look is to spray paint them before installing.

Build Vertically

To best maximize the space available to you, you’re going to want to build vertically. Especially if you’re working with a confined space that is taller than it is wide. By installing wire shelves every few feet, you’re going to be able to accommodate a lot more than if you simply stacked items on top of each other. For the higher shelves, place things that you don’t access very often. Whether it’s seasonal dishes, decorations or seasonal clothing like hats, gloves, scarves, or beach gear. Save the prime lower level real estate for the stuff you need to access regularly.

Install a Hanging Rod

No matter where in your home your storage project is taking place, you can use some extra space to hang stuff. Coats, out-of-season clothing, and special-occasion wear can all be neatly kept on a wire-shelf hanging rod.

You’ll find a variety of rod lengths that fit with wire shelving, so you’ll have the freedom to hang a lot or a little. Try and find a rod solution that hangs just beneath a wire shelf so that you make use of the area above the rod for further storage.

Throw Unwanted, Unneeded Items Away

No matter the storage project, it’s always a good idea to have yourself a nice little purge before hand. Useless stuff that is no longer wanted or needed has a way of piling up and making for cluttered unpleasantness.

Starting a new storage project gives you a great opportunity to go through the stuff you’re looking to store, and to see if there’s anything that can be thrown out or donated.  If you have a lot of stuff to rid off, throwing a rummage sale is always a nice way to fund your new storage project.
