How to Organize a Hall Closet

For most of us, the hall closet is a catch-all for boots, shoes, umbrellas, jackets, hats, scarves, and other belongings—not to mention the random collection of items that don’t belong there but don’t have a home anywhere else. Without a clear system for organizing all of your belongings, the hall closet can easily become a tangled mess—especially if you live with other family members. A few storage shelves, cubbies, and door hooks, however, can make all the difference.

1. Clear out the clutter.
The first step in organizing a hall closet is to clear it out. Take everything out of the closet so that you can see how much space you have to work with.

This is also the time to get rid of items that you don’t need and return stray items to their rightful place. If you have a difficult time letting go of belongings, ask a friend or family member to help you make decisions about what should stay and what should go.

2. Divide up the closet space.
Once you get a feel for what actually belongs in your hall closet, it’s time to decide how you want to store your items. Do you need space for multiple pairs of shoes? Do you need double hanging rods for lots of coats? A place to hang scarves or bags? Baskets for smaller items? Sketch out your hall closet on a piece of paper and label where you want items to go. A closet design professional can help you figure out how to use your space most efficiently.

3. Break out the tape measure.
Next, it’s time to figure out exactly how much space you have and how many organizers or shelves you can fit in your hall closet. Use a tape measure to get the dimensions of your closet. Write down the dimensions on your sketch. Then use these measurements to find baskets, organizers, and shelving that fits your closet and your storage needs.

4. Install closet shelving and organizers.
Once you’ve picked out the shelving and closet accessories that you want, it’s time to get them in place! You can either install the closet organizers yourself or get help. The professionals at Harkraft offer closet design and installation services, so you don’t have to worry about which screws go where.

5. Reorganize your stuff.
Now it’s time to get all of your stuff back in place. Place items that you use often in easy-to-reach places. Store items that you don’t need very often in the back of the closet or on the highest shelves. Then step back and enjoy your clean, well-organized hall closet!
