Making Your Dream Closet a Reality

A closet tends to be overlooked and largely neglected. By combining form and functionality,  a boring or disorganized closet can easily be transformed to become a centerpiece of your living space. Here’s how to customize your closet so that it could become the closet space of your dreams.

Purge, organize, and throw away worn or seldom-used items (or better yet, donate). Before you can customize your closet, is essential that you remove the clutter. When you are cleaning out your closet, ask yourself a couple of questions:

Does this piece of clothing fit?

Have I worn this piece of clothing in the past year?

Is this item damaged or require great effort to be repaired?

Does this clothing make me feel good about myself when I wear it or did I outgrow it?

Creating Your Perfect Closet Starts With An Empty One

Before going through these steps, there may be pieces of clothing that you can donate right now. If you have multiples of the same piece of clothing, then consider donating one to charity or giving it to a family member with similar sizing. It makes sense for you to stock up on your favorite dress, but it is important to realize that with proper care, pieces of clothing can last for several years. Don’t be afraid to donate the third clone of your favorite dress – you probably do not need it.

  • It makes sense to have several copies of undergarments and basics, but several clones of your favorite clothing are not necessary. Allow yourself to be critical when it comes to similar clothing that has different but similar patterns. Over the lifespan of these clothes, you naturally gravitated to a particular pattern. Keep these pieces and donate the others.
  • Throw away the clothing that you never considered wearing in the past couple of months––or never even cut off the tags. Like many shoppers, you might’ve made a couple of impulse purchases. If you never opened the packaging, or only wore it once – get rid of it or give it to someone who will use it.
  • Donate the clothes that you once loved, but you have now outgrown. Everyone has a couple of embarrassing fashion pieces in their closet that they used to adore but now they will never wear out in public. It’s time to confront these bad styles, learn from them, and emotionally sever yourself from it.
  • View your closet as a blank canvas where you can let your creativity run wild. Now that you have more space, make use of it. Baskets and even ladders are not only functional, but they also add character to a closet––and can give you the opportunity to spotlight your favorite shoe or handbag. If you are a fan of jewelry, then you can showcase it with a jewelry tree in your closet, with it acting as an accent piece to the overall theme of your closet.
  • Hang mirrors inside of the closet to give the illusion of more space. Mirrors can be particularly helpful in walk-in closets. Reflective surfaces give closed spaces like closets the illusion of a larger space.
  • Add a pop of color with wallpaper. The walls of many walk-in closets tend to be monotone. Wallpaper can instantly add life to your closet space. You can use this opportunity to use a wallpaper or even paint   that is similar to the colors in the room.
  • Use multi-functional storage solutions. You can repurpose a wooden folding chair by repainting it, and then mounting it on the wall. When the chair is open, you can use it as a shelf to add your shoes or hand-bang, with the bottom of the folding chair being useful to hang dresses and shirts. You may also find an ironing board that is attached to a mirror to be particularly useful. You can use one side to iron your dress, then pull it back into your closet once you’re done and then take a glimpse of your outfit.

Sketch and customize

Grab some graph paper and a pencil in your sought after closet. After you have finished visualizing your perfect closet, then you can start constructing and purchasing storage bins and other pieces of equipment to finalize your dream closet. Now that you have emptied your closet, you might want to take advantage of the space by adding an extended rod that would allow you more space for hanging garments.

Keep in mind that items like hangers, drawers, and storage bins can all be organized and customized to your liking. As long as you use fabric-safe paint around clothing and a sealant, then you can paint drawers, hangers, and wooden bins to complement your room’s overall theme.
